A dull sound can have several causes. Use a repeatable listening check instead of assuming every problem needs cleaning.
Make the comparison fair
Choose a familiar spoken clip and use the same output, device volume, and listening position each time. Remove a case only if it covers the opening. Keep equalizer and enhancement settings unchanged during the first comparison. Changing several things at once makes it difficult to identify what helped.
Find the boundary of the problem
Compare another source at a similar comfortable level. If only one recording sounds dull, the source may be responsible. If every source sounds dull through one accessory but clear through another, investigate that accessory and its connection. These are observations, not proof that a particular part is defective.
Inspect without probing
Look at the grille under good light. Do not insert a pin or push debris deeper into it. Follow your device manufacturer’s cleaning advice. Apple’s speaker troubleshooting guidance includes checking whether the speaker opening is blocked and, when needed, using a small clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. This guidance is not interchangeable with liquid-cleaning instructions for every device.
Use a sound check, then stop if unchanged
The Sound Check provides a repeatable tone so you can compare what you hear. It cannot tell whether a grille is clean. If distortion appears, stop rather than raising the volume. Persistent muffling after basic checks, especially following impact or liquid exposure, is a reason to seek service. Keep a short record of which outputs and sources you checked to help the technician reproduce the issue.
